Month 1 — Myself
The first month of school, and the first thing to learn is that you are somebody. You have a name, and it is yours. You are two. You have hands and feet and a nose. You have feelings, and they have names too. Five sessions, one for each of the things a child needs to know about themselves before they can share a room with twenty others. Learning outcomes: turns round when their own name is called, points to five parts of their own body, holds up fingers to show how old they are, names happy and sad on a face, says or points at one thing they like best. Month 2 — My Family
Four sessions about the people at home. Who they are, what they are called, what each of them does, and the thing that holds all of it together — looking after each other. The finger family song does more work this month than any screen does. Learning outcomes: names or points at three people in their own family, uses one family word — mumma, papa, dada, nana, says one thing a grown-up at home does, gives something back when a turn is over. Month 5 — Animals
Four sessions: farm animals, wild animals, pets and birds. Animals are the easiest month of the year, because the sounds do the teaching. A child who cannot yet say "cow" will say "moo" all afternoon, and the word arrives on the back of it. Learning outcomes: makes the sound of three or four animals, names a farm animal and a wild animal, says which animals live in a house with us, notices that birds have wings and feathers. Month 6 — Fruits & Vegetables
Healthy foods, then fruits, then vegetables, then a session about taste and texture — sweet, sour, crunchy, soft. This is the one month that should be done with the real thing in hand. A picture of a lemon has never made anybody's face do anything. Learning outcomes: names three fruits and two vegetables, says whether something is sweet or sour after tasting it, sorts fruits from vegetables with help, tries a new food without being made to. Month 8 — Nature
Sun, moon, trees, flowers and the weather. Five sessions that mostly happen outdoors: this is the month to do the screen part in four minutes and the rest of it in the garden, on a balcony, or at a window with the curtain open. Learning outcomes: points at the sun and says when we see the moon, names one part of a tree, says what the weather is like today, touches a leaf and a flower gently.
