Month 4 — Shapes
Five shapes, one a session — circle, square, triangle, rectangle and oval. Naming shapes belongs to next year, so this month is built for matching and for hands: find the one that is the same, walk round it on the floor, follow its outline with one finger. The names are said constantly and never demanded. Learning outcomes: matches a shape to another of the same shape, follows the outline of a shape with one finger, notices a corner and an edge, posts a shape through the hole it fits. Month 9 — Numbers
Three sessions: seeing a number, counting real things, and noticing which pile is bigger. The curriculum sets this month at one to twenty; the school's own Playgroup outcome says one to five, and five with real objects in your hand is worth far more than twenty chanted. The counting to twenty is waiting in Nursery. Learning outcomes: counts to five out loud with help, touches each object once while counting, says how many there are after counting up to three, says which pile has more. Counting is to five and it is done with objects that can be picked up.
